The Director of External Relations is responsible for leading the development initiatives for the University of Baltimore School of Law.  Working closely with key staff, faculty, and the Dean, the Director of External Relations will exhibit the energy, drive, and enthusiasm to motivate individuals and organizations to support the School with their time and money.  The Director handles all facets of the school's advancement operation, including fundraising and prospect development, as well as setting the law school’s strategic development goals and organizing the law school’s efforts to achieve those goals.  S/he works specifically with alumni, friends, faculty, staff and volunteers to raise private philanthropic support for both the general and specific needs of the School and the University of Baltimore. Within the University, the director works with the Office of Institutional Advancement as well as law school faculty, staff and students.  Externally, this position interacts with advisory boards, alumni, donors and leaders in the community.  

Responsibilities include:

Establish goals and coordinate fundraising strategies, including specific solicitation strategies for individuals and firms.  Work closely with the Dean of the School of Law to solicit gifts and steward donors.

Identify, cultivate and solicit major gift prospects, maintaining a portfolio of 100-150 prospects at all times.

Collaborate closely with the centralized Institutional Advancement office to participate in the annual giving appeal process, request and analyze data reports, and maintain accurate donor contact information.

Plan and execute donor and alumni-focused events including reunions, affinity receptions, and geographic chapters.

Work closely with law school boards, firms and organizations to encourage and manage participation in giving and in cultivating new donors.

Solicit high level major gifts in the $5,000+ per year range and coordinate the activities of others (i.e. center directors, program directors and department chairs) in the School of Law who are solicitors for prospects and donors

Assume principal responsibility for coordinating prospect visits for the dean.

Provide input to the Director of Communications on selected initiatives such as campus events, reunions and regional alumni meetings as well as the Alumni magazine.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years successful fundraising experience and successful track record  in soliciting major gifts ($25,000 and up required)

Preferred Education: Master’s degree

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to effectively articulate the strengths and opportunities for support for the School of Law
• Outstanding communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well with others
• Demonstrated ability to follow through on initiatives; Attention to detail
• Strong organizational and leadership skills

Occasional evening and weekend hours are required for special events and board meetings.
