Writing has enabled me to have what I think of as an eclectic and even adventurous career. I started out as a television reporter for an NBC affiliate in Green Bay, Wisc. In those days, we reporters did it all—report, shoot, write and edit. Later, I joined a major oil company and worked on a wide range of corporate communications projects, including a series of video programs for the company’s international tanker fleet.
That assignment took me to Curaçao, Cape Town, the Canary Islands, Europe and Latin America, so in a sense, I wrote my way around the world. For more than 10 years, I served the company as a corporate spokesman and lobbyist.
Since 1997, I have worked independently as a writer and consultant. My firm, Roger Friskey & Associates Communications LLC, works with corporations, small businesses and nonprofits.
At the University of Baltimore, I teach Argument and Persuasion, Public Relations Writing, Editorial Style and Image Making. It's exciting to open students' eyes to some of the possibilities before them. UB students are keenly interested in the practical aspects of the communications business, and it's very satisfying for me to share what I've learned along the way.
