Steven D. Cohen is passionate about helping students become
powerful communicators. He is an award-winning speaker who has delivered more than 100 courses and workshops on public speaking and workplace communication. Cohen has been quoted in publications such as the Financial Times and The Baltimore Sun and was featured in the BBC Radio 4 documentary, “Churchill’s Secret Cabinet.”
Cohen is currently conducting research in two primary areas: the intersections between public speaking and leadership development, and the design and delivery of oral communication training programs. He is particularly interested in the use of experiential exercises and technology-based approaches to help promote communication competence. Cohen’s work has appeared in College Teaching, Communication Teacher, the International Journal of Listening, Listening Education, Relevant Rhetoric, and Toastmaster magazine. Cohen is the author of two books, Public Speaking: The Path to Success and Lessons from the Podium: Public Speaking as a Leadership Art. He is also the editor of On the Path to Success: Readings and Resources, a collection of thought-provoking articles on the art and practice of public speaking.
Cohen previously served as managing director of the Oral Communication Program at the University of Maryland. As part of this role, he managed assessment initiatives, curriculum development, and instructor training for a large-scale general education program. Cohen also spent several years working in the private sector. He was an assistant vice president and team leader at Bank of America and later became a senior strategy consultant at IBM Global Business Services.
