The School of Public and International Affairs, in the College of Public Affairs, invites applications for a faculty position (open rank) to begin in August 2014 (contingent on final budget approval). The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the M.A. program in Global Affairs and Human Security and in the M.S. program in Nonprofit Management and Social Entrepreneurship. There will also the possibility of teaching in the undergraduate program in International Studies.    

Competitive applicants will be able to contribute expertise related to international and sustainable development, political economy of development, nonprofit management with an emphasis on global issues, and/ or social entrepreneurship in an NGO context. A faculty hire with a regional emphasis in the developing world (e.g. Africa, Asia, or Latin America) will be given preference, particularly if she/he has focuses on one or more of the above content areas. Evidence of teaching effectiveness and/ or course development related to managing NGOs, approaches to economic and social development, and nonprofit management and social entrepreneurship will be viewed favorably. The position is contingent upon final budget approval.

Candidates for this position must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree at the time of appointment in international development, international relations, political science, economics, nonprofit management, public administration, public policy or a related field of study.

Applicants should have a record of scholarly achievement that merits appointment at the tenure-track or tenured level, a record of scholarly achievement appropriate to the faculty rank for which they wish to be considered, and demonstrate the potential for quality instruction (junior level candidates) or evidence of effective teaching (senior-level candidates). The position requires traditional classroom instruction at the graduate level and may also involve some undergraduate and/or online instruction. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

The successful candidate will be joining growing graduate programs in Global Affairs and Human Security and Nonprofit Management and Social Entrepreneurship, both applied cross-disciplinary masters programs in the School of Public and International Affairs.   

The 39-credit cross-disciplinary M.A. in Global Affairs and Human Security is designed to give students an opportunity to explore international issues related to good governance, sustainable development, transnational problem-solving and the promotion of human security.  The program is designed to prepare students for careers in the nonprofit and public sectors and with supranational organizations. The 36-39 credit M.S. in Nonprofit Management and Social Entrepreneurship leverages the expertise of the College of Public Affairs and the Merrick School of Business to provide students with knowledge that addresses not just effective management but the forward-thinking initiatives of social enterprise and prepares them for leadership positions as nonprofit managers.

The School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA), within which both programs are housed, has twenty full-time faculty with advanced degrees from an array of distinguished universities, including Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Syracuse, UC-Berkley, Columbia, and George Mason University. Three faculty members are Fellows in the National Academy of Public Administration and one is a Fulbright Scholar. The School is home to a nationally accredited Master of Public Administration (MPA) program.
