Message from the Dean

Welcome to the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences.

Laura Bryan

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the College of Arts and Sciences! The college is a vibrant, lively place to live and learn, and it's the center of cultural and intellectual excellence for the University of Baltimore. We view ourselves as the heart of higher education at UB.

For as long as arts and sciences have been a cornerstone of higher education, they are also the focal point of the future of learning. Given the rapid pace of technological advancement, economic volatility, and social and cultural change, our highest priority is to prepare you for a meaningful and successful life in a global society. As the world gets smaller, our lives—and therefore our knowledge and capabilities—become more interdisciplinary, and we require a broad background of knowledge and expertise.

We should not let our fears hold us back from pursuing our hopes.
—John F. Kennedy

In the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences, you will learn, work and study at the intersection of the arts, humanities, sciences and technologies. You cannot rely solely on a single academic subject to prepare you for life ahead, and from foundational courses that introduce the building blocks of lifelong learning (communication, critical thinking, quantitative reasoning) to specialized upper-level classes, you will learn broadly and deeply in programs across this college. Here, you can build upon your strengths and sharpen your skills to achieve success in any number of fields.

As a student in the College of Arts and Sciences, you can:

  • learn cutting-edge IT technologies and gain a practical understanding of how technologies shape ideas, forms of expression and cultural values
  • focus on digital media that approaches communications design from both humanist and human-computer interaction perspectives
  • study the fundamentals of computer programming, 3-D modeling and animation and usability design
  • participate in various writing workshops and create your own print and electronic journals
  • explore the diversity of life and ecosystems of the world
  • learn about American, Asian, European and local history
  • discover the cultural, political and economic aspects of the arts while concentrating on the art that interests you most
  • develop creative communication and publication strategies, master electronic tools and adapt to emerging technologies.

I invite you to explore our innovative undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs. We also offer opportunities to create your own degree program with our Interdisciplinary Studies major. Your success at UB is our priority.

We hope you'll join us here, and I hope to hear from you soon!
