Our Bachelor of Arts program is a multidisciplinary examination of law and legal theory, involving the study of philosophy, history, literature, and government and public policy.  Although it provides a strong prelaw education, the Jurisprudence major is not strictly for those students who plan to go to law school.  A degree in Jurisprudence can prepare you for a variety of careers in both the public and private sectors, here and abroad.

Many of our alumni have gone on to law schools to earn their J.D.s and become lawyers.  But others have pursued graduate education in public policy, legal and ethical studies, criminal justice, and mediation and negotiation, among other things. Still others have launched careers directly out of their undergraduate study, pursuing positions such as:

  • local, state, or federal government employee
  • legal assistant / paralegal
  • legislative aide
  • law enforcement officer
  • nonprofit employee (particularly for cultural institutions)
  • entrepreneur

This major is designed to provide you with a broad understanding of law and the legal system and to encourage you to develop critical reading, effective research, analytical thinking, and persuasive written and oral communication skills. You'll strengthen and perfect your abilities in decision-making, problem-solving, and leadership. The program will not only enhance your career prospects, but help you become a lifelong learner who cares about civic engagement.
