Langsdale Library is hosting “Viewpoints of war and music: A panel session on The Cellist of Sarajevo” on Tuesday, October 2 at 7 pm in the Lucy and Vernon Wright Theater, Student Center.
The Maryland Humanities Council holds a yearly program called One Maryland One Book, which promotes reading groups, lectures and discussions on a book of their choosing. This year they have chosen The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway. The novel focuses on the Siege of Sarajevo and is inspired by the cellist Vedran Smailovi, who performed in the rubble of shelled buildings.
The evening will start with accomplished cellist Dorotea Racz, playing both the Albinoni's Adagio in G Minor (the piece featured in the novel) and David Wilde's “The Cellist of Sarajevo,” inspired by the true story of cellist Vedran Smailovi.
A panel of faculty and guest speakers—including Daniel Page, Kristen Eyssell, and Ivan Sascha Sheehan—will follow the cello performance. They will address different themes in the novel, such as writing about war and conflict, the role of the arts in sites of conflict, and the psychology of survival, providing a multidisciplinary approach to the same text. There will be time at the end of the session for audience questions, comments, and discussion with the panelists.
