"When Your Neighbor is a Stranger: A Community Conversation in the Aftermath of George Zimmerman" will take place in the Learning Commons Town Hall on Monday, Oct. 21. To begin, a community discussion concerning the issues raised by the death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin and the subsequent trial of George Zimmerman will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Immediately following, a number of panelists with expertise in these issues will last until 8 p.m. in the same location. This is a free and open event, although online pre-registration is required.
Panelists include Monique Dixon, director of the Criminal and Juvenile Justice Program at the Open Society Institute-Baltimore; Lisa Williams, director of the Baltimore County Public Schools Office of Equity and Cultural Proficiency; Caryn York, policy associate at Job Opportunities Task Force and a specialist on workforce issues; and Thomas LaVeist, director of the Hopkins Center for Health Disparities Solutions at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Diane Bell McKoy, president and CEO of Associated Black Charities, will serve as moderator.
This discussion is presented by Associated Black Charities, the YWCA of Greater Baltmore, the University of Baltimore, the Baltimore Community Foundation, Baltimore Racial Justice Action, Community Churches for Community Development, Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle, Sojourner-Douglass College, and the Baltimore Urban League.
