Now through June 20, teams from 10 local high schools are competing to become the 2015 University of Baltimore Cyber Discovery Champions. A team of six students and two teachers from each school are spending a week at UB, deliving into all issues cyber. The goal is to inspire these students to be "21st century cyber citizens"—people well-versed in the challenges and opportunities of life in a high-technology environment.
The camp experience includes movies, discussion sessions, hands-on information technology labs (including robot soccer!), a cryptographic treasure hunt, creative storytelling, and a final cyber challenge.
Danielle Fowler, camp director and associate professor in UB's Merrick School of Business, said, "Cyber discovery is a great experience because it engages students who don't necessarily think of themselves as interested in STEM. They learn about how cyber issues affect them, regardless of whether they want to be in IT, a lawyer, or a philosopher. It's also just fun. They get to bond with 59 other students, as well as their high school teachers, as they learn to program robots to play soccer, design skits, participate in a cryptographic treasure hunt, observe the history of cyber through movies, and debate UB faculty about the ethical, legal and philosophical issues raised by the cyber world."
Faculty from UB are leading these sessions. They have backgrounds as diverse as philosophy, law, business, gaming, information technology, math and information security.
The camp, now in its fourth year, is hosting students from these schools:
- Archbishop Spalding
- Baltimore City College
- Baltimore Polytechnic Institute
- Bryan Mawr
- Catonsville High School
- Gilman
- Glenelg Country School
- Loyola Blakefield
- Saint Mary's School
- Western High School
