Emergencies

From time to time, the weather, power outages and other factors will play a role in the daily life of the UB campus. Especially during the winter months, road conditions or the sudden onset of a storm can compel the campus to change its operating schedule or close down completely. An emergency can occur at any time of day or night, and our goal is to keep you informed and up to date.

Emergency announcements will be communicated via:

Decisions about whether to delay the opening of the University or to close altogether are made as promptly as possible. Announcements about these decisions are issued as soon as possible thereafter.

Keep in mind that only the UB home page, text message system, campus e-mail and telephone system will host official announcements. While media outlets are used to broadcast these announcements, their reports may contain errors or ambiguities.

If you don't see or hear an official announcement, you can assume that the UB campus is open and operating under a normal schedule.

For more details about UB's various methods of alerting you about our status as it relates to emergencies, visit our Emergency Closing Announcements Web page. For important information about preparing for an emergency, visit our Emergency Preparedness page.

We also urge you to sign up for UB's emergency text message alert system today—it's easy, and it's free to join. (Make sure you sign up for the weather alert portion of the system.) Your participation in this automated system allows the UB Police Department to more effectively and efficiently handle situations that frequently arise during emergency situations.

As always, please use caution as you make your way to and from campus.

Individuals who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Deaf/Blind, or have Speech Disorders that need to contact UB Police Department may do so by dialing Maryland Relay at 1-800-201-7165.
