The Staff Senate is honored to congratulate Karyn Schulz on being awarded the 2013 University System of Maryland Board of Regents' Staff Award for Exceptional Contribution to the Institution and/or Unit to Which a Person Belongs - Exempt Staff.
Schulz was nominated for the award by President Robert L. Bogomolny with letters of recommendation from Provost Joseph S. Wood and professors Dan Gerlowski and Debra Stanley. The nomination was submitted in recognition of Schulz's accomplishments during the restructuring of shared governance at UB. As noted by Bogomolny, "Karyn emerged as a clear leader and trailblazer, not just for the staff, but for the UB community at large. She negotiated complex subjects and sometimes difficult personalities, placing the best interest of her constituents in the forefront and ensuring a credible process that was fair to all constituencies."
The reorganization of shared governance required the dedication of several people serving on a Shared Governance Workgroup, going beyond their regular duties and hours. Because of the hard work of members like Schulz, Stanley wrote, "For the first time in the history of the University, the new shared governance model allows faculty, staff, and students to have an equal role in University shared governance." The UB Staff Senate was a product of the restructure, and Wood points to Schulz as integral to this by noting, "She was highly effective…in advocating for the staff in the [Shared Governance] group meetings."
The Staff Senate applauds Schulz on her well-deserved recognition.
