The University of Baltimore’s Black Student Union will host a conference that explores federal cases that changed America on Wednesday, Nov. 15 from noon to 5 p.m. in the University’s H. Mebane Turner Learning Commons Town Hall, 1415 Maryland Ave.  The event is free and open to the public.

The conference will include panel discussions and lectures with leading experts in law, education and public affairs, addressing topics such as the role of education and religion in helping to end homelessness, and the impact of the Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action on colleges. Michael Hill, president of the University’s Black Student Union, will serve as the conference facilitator.

The conference agenda and topics are as follows:

TOPIC: Dred Scott v. Sanford (The Dred Scott Decision)
PRESENTERS: Justin Hollimon, executive in residence, UBalt’s Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences (YGCAS) and Devy B. Russell, lecturer, YGCAS

1-1:55 p.m.
TOPIC: Black Land Loss in the U.S. from 14% to less than 2%
PRESENTERS: Charlie Dugger, former Baltimore City Public Schools teacher, and Lena Mobley

2-2:55 p.m.
TOPIC: The Land Acts of 1820 and 1877, and The Homestead Act of 1862
PRESENTER: Michael Moran, adjunct faculty, YGCAS

TOPIC: The Emancipation Proclamation
PRESENTER: Michael Hill, president, UBalt Black Student Union

3-3:55 p.m.
TOPIC: Affirmative Action and Race-Based Admissions in 2023
PRESENTER: Samantha McDermitt, adjunct faculty, YGCAS

4-4:55 p.m.
TOPIC: Frederick Douglas and Booker T. Washington, and Their Contributions to Politics, History and Education
