The level of poverty in Baltimore City is astounding, with one in four residents living below the poverty line. As Maryland is one of the wealthiest states in the United States, these statistics are particularly disparaging. Unfortunately, on any given night, about 4,000 of Baltimore’s citizens are homeless. Moreover, homeless populations tend to have coexisting illnesses and psychiatric disorders that require regular, uninterrupted treatment that is not viable without first establishing the stability of adequate housing.

Kristen Kearby is the Director of Development and Communications at Project PLASE. Crystle Barfield is a student at UB, a previous intern at Project PLASE, and an advocate for those currently experiencing homelessness.
Project PLASE serves the most vulnerable individuals among Baltimore’s homeless population, people facing substantial barriers to gaining housing. We believe that each individual can overcome the hardships of life and experience a sense of wholeness with a stable place to call home, ample access to resources, and the ability to direct the process of our own growth and healing. To help homeless individuals reach these ends, Project PLASE provides our clients with stable housing, personalized case management, individual and group counseling, skills training, and physical health care. We treat, restore, and rehabilitate the whole person and empower each individual to function at the highest level possible.
