I am Alex Binder,
I am a 1L and currently serve on SBA as a 1L representative. As to my background, I attended York College of Pennsylvania where I was involved in many school associations including serving as a senior senator for student senate (York’s version of SBA). Being a part of SBA has been a great experience and it has been great meeting the student body. I hope to be able to further serve SBA as a 2L representative and continue to get to know the student body. One idea I have for the future is for the school to spend more money on the students, such as free pizza at least every other week to make law school a more enjoyable experience.
Respectfully, Your 1L and hopefully future 2L SBA representative
Friends and colleagues, I am Nicholas B. Hawkins, candidate for the 2L Representative position for the Student Bar Association. I am pleased to present to you some of my goals, my duties, and qualifications for the position of 2L Representative.
The 2L Representative must know the concerns surrounding the second-year class, articulate them to the Student Bar Association and the school administration, and assist with organizing a solution. One of the biggest concerns facing our class is the value of our law degree. Our law school’s rank has significantly dropped since the last US News and World Reports ranking. Many of us are thinking, “How will this affect the value of my law degree?” “Will this drop affect my employment prospects?” “Am I getting the best legal education possible for my money?” My friends, these circumstances smack us in the face with what looks like a harsh reality, but I believe we can overcome this obstacle and many others in the next year. My goal is to make sure that our law degrees are strong in the Baltimore and D.C. communities and beyond. I pride myself on professionalism, excellence, and the ability to network, skills essential to succeed in law school and ones that will provide opportunities to our class through interactions with firms, judges, and organizations.
I also believe that offering academic support, providing legal experience opportunities, and facilitating conversations on current legal issues, both locally and globally, are paramount to our success as informed 2L students. My goal is to make sure these services are available to the 2L class and that we are also taking advantage of the many enriching opportunities here at UB.
Regarding qualifications for the role of 2L Representative, I have held positions in the SGA at Loyola University of Maryland and I was the President of the Black Student’s association for three years. I served on the student advisory board to the college President and I currently sit on the Board of Directors for the Alumni Association. I have also recently instituted leadership programs and community service initiatives through non-profit organizations in Baltimore. I do not believe in leadership for leadership or “resume’s sake,” but decided to hold these positions as a voice for my peers and as a participant in the decision making process for my community. Professionally, I have worked as a trial paralegal at a plaintiff’s asbestos firm and also as a wealth management assistant at another. Through these experiences, I have honed my decision-making, organization and leadership skills, which are necessary to the position as a 2L Representative.
Certainly my duties as a 2L Representative will include reporting on actions of the SBA, serving on committees, and creating events for the class, but I believe a more active role exists in listening to the needs of my colleagues and then finding solutions to address those needs. I do not make promises that I cannot keep, nor do I make assertions that are beyond my ability to support. Rather, I present to you as a colleague promising to represent the 2L class as a liaison between my peers, the Student Bar Association, and the entire Law School community.
I thank the many supporters and the SBA for this opportunity. Most importantly, I thank you voters in advance for your support and confidence in my abilities to lead you through our second year of law school and to serve as the extension of your voice. As the candidate for the SBA 2L Representative, I appreciate your vote for me, Nicholas B. Hawkins.
