UB Usability Lab

Designed to support the University of Baltimore's D.S. in Information and Interaction Design, M.S. in Interaction Design and Information Architecture and various information design certificate programs, the Usability Lab features:

  • gaze replay, gaze plot and hot spot maps of user gaze data using a Tobii T60 eye tracker and Tobii Studio software
  • digital picture-in-picture capability using Morae
  • a professional sound system with audio mixer
  • audio/video control and an observation room with a one-way mirror
  • three monitors in an observation room capable of echoing the participants' screen and of showing live gaze view.

The testing room is large enough for focus groups and features a one-way mirror and a video feed to facilitate observation.

The lab can also be rented on a full-day or half-day basis.

Lab activities

Lab activities are coordinated and supervised by Professor Kathryn Summers, the University of Baltimore's resident expert on user research and usability testing. Research activities include:

  • card sorting
  • image collaging
  • contextual inquiry and field studies
  • quantitative and qualitative usability testing
  • eye tracking studies.

Students who have completed the Research Methods for Interaction Design course often have the opportunity to participate in industry projects in collaboration with Summers.

Please make an appointment to reserve time in the UB usability lab by emailing with the dates and times you would like. We will do our best to accommodate your schedule.

For more information about reserving the lab, read more about renting it and about student use.
