Jurisprudence (noun): ‘the science or philosophy of law.’

The Bachelor of Arts in Jurisprudence is a multidisciplinary program examining law and legal theory through the study of philosophy, history, literature, and government and public policy. One of UB’s premier prelaw programs, the jurisprudence major is not only for students who plan to go to law school. A degree in jurisprudence can also prepare you for a variety of careers in both the public and private sectors, here and abroad.

Many of our alumni have gone on to law school to earn their Juris Doctor (J.D.) and become lawyers. But others have pursued graduate education in public policy, legal and ethical studies, criminal justice, and mediation and negotiation, among other things. Still others have launched careers directly out of their undergraduate study, pursuing positions such as:

  • local, state, or federal government employee
  • legal assistant/paralegal
  • legislative aide
  • law enforcement officer
  • nonprofit employee (particularly for cultural institutions)
  • entrepreneur.

The jurisprudence program is designed to provide you with a broad understanding of law and the legal system, and to encourage you to develop critical reading, effective research, analytical thinking, and persuasive written and oral communication skills. You'll strengthen and perfect your abilities in decision-making, problem-solving, and leadership. The major in jurisprudence is one of UB’s top prelaw options that will not only enhance your career prospects but help you become a lifelong learner who values civic engagement.
