Kevin Dunbar, Maryland’s Most Admired CEO, 2013

Please join the Merrick School of Business, “Lessons from Legends” program as we welcome Kevin R. Dunbar to campus to discuss leadership, entrepreneurship and innovation.

A visionary leader, Kevin Dunbar has effectively overseen the implementation of enterprise-wide technological solutions to improve the productivity and profitability of his organization, while continuing to introduce new products and services to expand Dunbar’s customer base.

Throughout his career, now spanning more than three decades with the Dunbar family-owned enterprise, Kevin Dunbar has progressed through a variety of managerial and executive positions within both the Operating and Sales divisions of the firm. He has also been a key player in Company’s dynamic growth and expansion which has grown a small regional armored carrier with annual revenues of about $8 million into a greatly expanded Dunbar security organization with annual revenues now approaching $300 million. The Dunbar Board of Directors elected him President in 2001 and he was appointed as CEO in 2009.

    Kevin Dunbar is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Dunbar Armored, Inc. – America’s largest independently-owned armored car, cash management and cyber security services firm. In this role, Kevin leads a nationwide company which serves retailers, financial institutions and government entities seeking to safeguard valuables in-transit, protect employees and enhance security at their place of business. A widely-recognized entrepreneur, business leader and innovator, Kevin Dunbar was awarded the “Maryland’s Most Admired CEO” award” by The Daily Record in 2013, SmartCEO magazine’s “Voltage” award for “Technology Implementer,” also in 2013, and the “Entrepreneur of the Year Award”for Business Solutionsby Ernst & Young in 2008.

    With a fleet of 1,500 armored trucks, a national network of 85 branch and 37 cash vault facilities and the most advanced digital package tracking technology in the industry, Dunbar protects cash in-transit and other items of value including precious metals, expensive jewelry and electronic data. The firm also designs and distributes a variety of security-related business products such as in-store “smart safes” and tamper-evident deposit bags, provides professionally-trained guards for premise security and installs integrated, monitoring, access and surveillance systems.

    Dunbar represents the third generation of his family in serving at the helm of a Dunbar family-owned armored car company. Dunbar’s grandfather, George W. Dunbar, began the family heritage in the armored car industry when he co-founded Mercer and Dunbar – New England’s first armored car company – in Hartford, Connecticut in 1923. His father, James L. Dunbar, continued the tradition by founding Federal Armored Express, (now Dunbar Armored) in Baltimore, Maryland in 1956. Today, as the leader of a successful, dynamic organization, Kevin uses his entrepreneurial skill and strategic vision to steadfastly ensure his company’s continuing innovative leadership position at the cutting-edge of the security and financial services industries.

    Well-known throughout the industries Dunbar serves, Kevin Dunbar is a member of the National Armored Car Association (NACA) the Independent Armored Car Operators Association (IACOA) and serves as a member of the M&T Bank’s Advisory Board. He is a past member of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) and he maintains current membership in the World President’s Organization (WPO), Maryland Business for Responsive Government (MBRG), the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Press Club of Washington. With a strong commitment to community service, he currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Loyola University, Sellinger School of Business, Gilchrist Hospice Care and the Johns Hopkins Neurosurgery Advisory Board. He is a Past Board Member of the St. Paul’s School for Girl’s, a past member of the James Madison University Alumni Association and he contributes to a variety of worthy charities to benefit needy and underserved people in the Baltimore area community.

    Dunbar earned his B.S. degree from James Madison University in 1980 and his M.B.A. degree from The University of Baltimore in 1995.
