This course will expose students to successful business practices in what is arguably the most vibrant economy in Latin America. Chile, once ruled by a leftist government, adopted US style economics and changed direction to a stable free-market economy that has garnered international investment, grown significantly, and become a world class competitor.
Course Description
This study abroad course fullfils the requirements for:
MGMT498/798 Marketing Strategy in Latin America (counts as a MGMT
or MKTG elective) Course Prerequisites: Completion of MKTG 301 or
equivalent Length: 1 week during the winterim session. The actual
travel dates to Chile will be January 15-22, 2011. Martin Luther
King Day lies within this period to reduce the number of vacation
days from work.
This tour features visits to successful companies in Chile
which are models of marketing strategy. Students will gain a view
of the changes supplied by several university experts who aided the
country’s transformation. In addition, Chile has created
companies who have successfully protected their markets in the face
of foreign competition. Chile’s retail sector is remarkably
competitive.
We will also visit some world renowned companies like Nestle,
Concha y Toro Winery, Walmart (Chile), as well as eight other
companies. Typically, marketing managers or VP’s of marketing
will offer insight into their company’s stategies and
successes as well as hard learned lessons.
Course Design and Schedule
Six days of visits to companies and sights in Santiago and
lectures by local university faculty. Students participating in
this international study experience will be assigned to teams and

Chilean environment. The goal is to unlock the secrets of Chilean
retail competitiveness.
