The University of Baltimore's Hoffberger Center for Professional Ethics will host its annual Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland on Saturday, Nov. 7 beginning at 8 a.m. in Room 103 of Fourier Hall. Campuses competing this year include the College of Notre Dame, Towson University, the United States Naval Academy, the University of Baltimore, UMBC and the University of Maryland, College Park.
Each institution will field a team of undergraduates who will compete in a series of three sessions with two concurrent matches in each session. The Ethics Bowl is not a debate, but rather a competition to see which team can analyze an ethical case most effectively and pose the best solution to the presented ethical problems. A match consists of a moderator, who asks an opening question to the teams, and three judges who ask follow-up questions. Teams are judged on how clear, thoughtful and systematic they are in answering questions from judges, and in pointing out weaknesses in the opposing team's case analysis.
The Hoffberger Center initiated an Ethics Bowl competition for area community colleges several years ago. The success of those competitions led the center to initiate an Ethics Bowl among area colleges and universities for the purpose of bringing together students and professors from UB's sister institutions to take part in a collegial activity of mutual interest. The Ethics Bowl does not emphasize winning or losing; instead, it focuses on the experience and fun of competing.
