As the University of Baltimore prepares to welcome freshman students for the first time since 1975, the University recognizes the unique financial challenges that face today’s aspiring college-bound students.
On Tuesday, Sept. 26, UB Pres. Robert L. Bogomolny unveiled the UB First Scholars program, a special financial aid offer for UB’s 2007 entering freshman class. This scholarship program, which features free tuition for all members of the initial entering class, sets new precedents for making higher education affordable and accessible.
UB First Scholars is made possible by the generosity of a private donor. The program will cover tuition and fees for all new first-year students enrolling in fall 2007. Applicants must meet Maryland residency requirements and accept any federal and state grant aid for which they qualify.
The formal announcement of the UB First Scholars program will take place in the fifth floor of the University of Baltimore Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave.
The UB First Scholars program will strengthen the University’s reentry into lower-division undergraduate education, specifically in recruiting recent high school graduates to campus. The fixed size of the entering class—projected to be between 100 and 140—coupled with the donor's desire to fund the program has made this initiative possible.
In addition, the following financial aid developments are in place for the coming year:
- The Dean's Scholars Program, which provides law students full tuition remission and book stipends, now entering its fifth year and currently enrolls 24 students.
- Graduate student scholarships in the Yale Gordon College of Liberal Arts and the Merrick School of Business have increased by $90,000.
- Need-based aid for undergraduate and graduate students has increased by $250,000.
- The new Transfer Scholars program for undergraduate transfer students has been expanded to include those with a 2.5 GPA or higher.
