Poets & Writers Magazine, the country's foremost journal for writers both new and established, has named the University of Baltimore's M.F.A. program in Creative Writing & Publishing Arts as one of the nine most distinctive programs in the United States, according to an article in its November/December issue.
In a piece entitled "Nine Distinctive Programs," the basics of the UB School of Communications Design's master's level writing/publishing program are described, alongside those of some of the nation's most respected master's-level specializations in writing, at institutions including the University of Iowa, the California Institute of the Arts and the University of Texas, Austin.
"The [UB] School of Communication Design offers an MFA in creative writing and publishing arts that encourages students to make their work public," the article states.
Other institutions among the nine include Chatham University, Hamline University, the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the Whidbey Writers Workshop.
Kendra Kopelke, director of UB's M.F.A. in Creative Writing & Publishing Arts and associate professor in the School of Communications Design, said the Poets & Writers recognition is an "empowering" moment for the program—as well as for the school's home, the Yale Gordon College of Liberal Arts and UB as a whole.
"Poets & Writers is intensely important to authors and publishers everywhere," Kopelke said. "To receive this kind of accolade is like opening UB's doors to thousands of writers and communicators who may have only heard of us in passing. I'm proud to be part of this success."
The School of Communications Design is one of seven schools and divisions in the College of Liberal Arts. It offers undergraduate courses of study in English and Corporate Communication, as well as master's-level courses in Publications Design, Integrated Design and Creative Writing and Publishing Arts. The school's philosophy views learning as a give-and-take process, and its disciplines bring together art and commerce, words and design, and traditional and new media.
