Antieris Johnson, a University of Baltimore student pursuing degrees in both the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Public Affairs, has been selected as a recipient of the Daily Record's 2014 Leading Women award.
This year's list of Leading Women also includes UB alumnae Jessica Emerson, J.D. '13, Lisa D. Sparks, B.A. '05, J.D. ’07, and Marla Zide, J.D. '01.
Antieris, a full-time UB student pursuing an accelerated B.A. in Integrated Arts/M.S. in Nonprofit Management and Social Entrepreneurship degree, manages her own Baltimore-based community action program called Art Adopts a Child. Antieris developed and launched AAC in 2011 to raise awareness for adoption through community art projects and to help youth who are aging out of the foster care system establish emotional permanency through art therapy, music therapy and mentorship.
"It is both humbling and validating to be recognized for what I'm naturally driven to do," said Antieris on being recognized for her commitment to effecting change in the community.
Though never in foster care herself, Antieris is adopted and says she feels deeply passionate about using the arts to help empower and change the lives of Baltimore's foster care population.
Antieris expects to graduate from UB in fall 2016, after which she plans to dedicate her full attention to turning AAC into a social enterprise.
The Daily Record launched the Leading Women Awards in 2010 at the 15th annual Maryland's Top 100 Women celebration, to recognize the next generation of Maryland's women leaders.
This year's Leading Women awards honor 46 Maryland women 40 years of age or younger for the accomplishments they have made so far in their careers. A panel of judges that includes business and legal professionals and a representative from the Daily Record, selected the honorees based on their professional experience, community involvement and commitment to inspiring change.
Antieris will be honored along with the other 2014 Leading Women at an awards reception and dinner on Dec. 4 at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore. Winners will also be profiled in a special Leading Women magazine that will be inserted into the Dec. 5 issue of the Daily Record and available online.
The University of Baltimore is a member of the University System of Maryland and comprises the College of Public Affairs, the Merrick School of Business, the UB School of Law and the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences.
