Continuing its history of providing University of Baltimore students with a space to perform for the campus audience and surrounding community, Spotlight UB will present "Snapshots," a series of memoir monologues written and performed by students in the ARTS 297-Performing Monologue course, on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Wright Theater. The event is free and open to the public. The theater is located on the top floor of the UB Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave.
The members of this new and unique class developed their monologues under the instruction of Kimberley Lynne, arts and theater manager and affiliate assistant professor in the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences. The course's curriculum combines literary studies, local history, and theatrical training. Students read social justice theater plays as examples of dramatic monologue, and engage in vocal exercises that prepare them for live performance.
Lynne said that her students experienced moments of self-discovery as they became conscious of the way they breathe and speak, and as they engaged in discussions about socialization, self-image, race and class.
"Students who previously believed they had no story to tell found inspiration in the act of performing," Lynne said.
As they studied monologue-based plays like The Exonerated, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf, One Particular Saturday and The Laramie Project, the class explored how theater serves as a conduit for both profound personal expression and social commentary. The students soon found their lives and stories recontextualized in a social and historical crucible, resulting in poignant monologues that reflect life in Baltimore as a young person.
