The 2015 edition of the University of Baltimore's Emerging Voices Project—an annual series of workshops for projects by local writers and students who are unveiling their work to the public for the first time—will be presented by Spotlight UB, beginning May 13 and continuing through June 3. As the University's outlet for creative live performance, Spotlight UB provides these artists with a venue and a live audience who offer valuable feedback, allowing the artist to develop his or her ideas to the fullest potential. In return, Spotlight UB provides free arts programming and entertainment to the community.
Emerging Voices has been enriching the Baltimore arts scene every summer since 2010. Performances will run every Wednesday beginning May 13.
This year, the series kicks off with the Playwrights' Lab on May 13 at 2 p.m. The Playwrights' Lab is a series of scenes from plays written by talented student playwrights over the spring semester as part of their work in a writing course. The lab helps up and coming playwrights to gain exposure, and introduces them to the realities of staging a play and working with a live audience. In the post-show talk back, the writers field questions as playwrights. This workshop deepens the writers' interest in their craft. This year, their stories range from a girl who collects hearts, an old man haunted by his dead wife, and criminals stalking their prey.
The week of May 20, at 12:30 p.m., Emerging Voices will present Irish Culture Presentations by students in a world culture class focused on Ireland. These students have spent their spring semester learning the history, customs, and social realities of Ireland from the days of the Celts to the modern era. Several students will be selected to reprise their final presentations on stage, during which they will delve into specific aspects and phenomena of Irish culture, which, in turn, will spark a conversation about American social realities.
Next up, WBJZ radio host and Creative Writing and Publishing Arts graduate Judith Krummeck will debut her screenplay A Chain of Voices on May 27 at 7 p.m. Krummeck's screenplay is an adaptation of a novel by Andre Brink of the same title; it tells the story of a South African slave and his complicated relationship with the master he ultimately rebels against.
Poets Tracy Dimond and Amanda McCormick take the EVP stage on June 3 at 7 p.m. for their show "Did You Cover Up?," a performance of lyrical work. Dimond is a graduate of UB's Creative Writing and Publishing Arts MFA program, while McCormick is a current candidate in the same program. After meeting in classes, they formed Ink Press Productions, an independent press that has published and staged the work of numerous young Baltimore writers.
These events, as with most Spotlight UB events, takes place at the Wright Theater, located in UB's Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave. Reduced rate parking is available on event nights at the UB Maryland Avenue Garage, located on Maryland Avenue between Biddle and Chase streets, or in the Fitzgerald Garage on Oliver Street; a voucher will be provided at the box office, and the UB shuttle is available to transport patrons between the venue and the garage.
