UB Foundation Announces New Chair, Six New Board Members

The University of Baltimore Foundation has announced the appointment of a new chair as well as six new members to its board. The new members, all of whom are alumni of the University of Baltimore, will participate in fundraising and other activities designed to provide financial support to the University. The board chair serves a two-year appointment, while each of the newly appointed members hold a three-year term, renewable two more times for a total of nine years of service.
The foundation is a designated 501c3, first established in 1969. In addition to assisting in the financial well-being of the institution, the board also provides leadership, oversight and guidance to the UB administration in advancing the mission of the University.
James P. Nolan, J.D. '74, managing director of Council, Baradel, Kosmerl & Nolan, P.A., Annapolis, Md. has been named chair of the board. His practice includes general civil and criminal litigation, administrative law, business and commercial law, corporate law, construction law, real estate and land use law and personal injury law. Nolan was admitted to the Maryland bar in 1974, and is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. He is a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, the Maryland Bar Foundation and the National Conference of Bar Presidents. In addition to his new role as chair of the UB Foundation Board of Directors, Nolan currently serves as a delegate in the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association and is a member and secretary of the Board of the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County. He is a past president of the National Conference of Bar Presidents and the Maryland State Bar Association.
The new board members are:
Gregory M. Derwart, M.A. '96, a senior operations executive with more than 20 years of professional experience in the private sector, government and nonprofit arenas. Previously he worked as the chief operating officer of the Baltimore Office for Promotion and the Arts. Derwart is active in the Baltimore business and nonprofit communities, serving on the boards of UB's Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Advisory Council, the Chesapeake Human Resources Foundation, and the Baltimore Workforce Investment Board. He is also active with the Chesapeake Human Resources Association and the Greater Baltimore Committee. Derwart is a graduate of the 2006 GBC Leadership program, was a 2011 recipient of The Daily Record’s Very Important Professionals Successful by 40 Award, was named by the Chesapeake Human Resources Foundation as a 2011 Fellow, and was awarded the SmartCEO Executive Management Award in 2013.
Tracey A. DuBree, B.S. '02, a financial advisor with UBS Financial Services Inc. where she began her career in 2003. In addition to her UB degree, DuBree also holds her Series 7 and 66 designations, as well as insurance licenses in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and Florida.
Deborah V. Kleiner, M.P.A. '94, communications manager for the Choose Clean Water Coalition with more than 15 years of public relations and public policy experience in Baltimore communications agencies and nonprofit organizations. Before joining the coalition, Kleiner was a founder and principal of a Baltimore-based boutique public relations agency whose Mid-Atlantic clients are focused on the built environment. Prior to that, Kleiner developed and implemented communications strategies and tactics, provided community relations and crisis communications counsel and organized local and national events for a variety of national clients including Home Depot and John Deere.
Brett S. Lininger, J.D. '05, a principal at Semmes, Bowen & Semmes and co-chair of the firm's Business Practice Group. Lininger has represented various industries before the Maryland General Assembly including insurance, healthcare, energy, transportation, and information technology. Previously, he was the director of government relations for the Maryland Insurance Administration. His legal practice focuses on insurance regulatory and transactional matters as well as general business issues.
Rachel T. McGuckian, J.D. '93, a principal at Miles and Stockbridge representing businesses ranging from listed public companies and real estate developers to government contractors and family enterprises in all aspects of their dealings, internal and external. She also represents private clients in complex divorce, Hague and contested estate matters. A seasoned trial and appellate litigator, McGuckian was named one of the Top 100 Super Lawyers in both Maryland and in Washington, D.C. McGuckian previously served as law clerk to Judge Deborah K. Chasanow of the Southern Division of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland and is frequently retained as local counsel in that court and in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, Md.
Robert O. Stephenson, B.S. '86, chief financial officer of Omega Healthcare Investors, Inc. Stephenson previously served as the senior vice president and treasurer of Integrated Health Services, Inc., and held various positions at CSX Intermodal, Inc., Martin Marietta Corporation and Electronic Data Systems.
