Face to Face With Brazil’s Booming Business Economy

Prior to jetting off to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro for UB’s Global Field Study trip in March, undergraduate and graduate students in the course researched the companies and organizations they were scheduled to visit in Brazil and presented their findings to the class. Sabrina Viscomi, M.B.A. ’13, researched Instituto Baccarelli, a nonprofit school in one of São Paulo’s poorest favelas, or communities, that teaches neighborhood children about music. “It’s a means for having a future,” Viscomi says, “which most of those kids [in the favela] will never have.” View Viscomi’s presentation on the music school.
Mark Samuel, B.S. ’95, an alumnus of the B.S. in Business Administration’s accounting specialization, was invited to join the group traveling to Brazil, and the photographer shared his perspective—as captured through his camera lens—with the University of Baltimore Magazine. When Samuel was at UB, there were no study-abroad opportunities available, so he organized his own semester abroad at Regent’s American College London and studied, fittingly, economics and photography. Samuel is now an accountant and team leader in the International Directorate at the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis; see more of his photos at www.marksamuelphotography.com.
