JOHANNES BOTES, associate professor in the College of Public Affairs’ School of Public and International Affairs, traveled to South Africa for three months to teach a course on ethnic and cultural conflict at Stellenbosch University, his alma mater, in the spring. Botes is one of 60 scholars awarded a 2015 Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship, which also allowed him to conduct research on the country’s National Development Plan and on the history and development of nation-building in the now 20-year-old, post-apartheid South Africa.
