A recent Global Field Study course led by Dr. Kevin Wynne and Assistant Dean Kathea Smith took University of Baltimore students to Panama for an immersive academic experience. The course provided invaluable insights into international business practices and cultural exchange.

The itinerary was packed with engaging activities, including a VIP tour of the Panama Canal and Miraflores locks, where students witnessed the engineering marvel firsthand. They also delved into the country's financial sector with a visit to Banco Lafise, gaining valuable insights into the differences between Panamanian and U.S. banking practices.

Cultural immersion was a key component of the trip. Students journeyed into the jungle to visit an Embera village, experiencing firsthand the history, traditions, and way of life of this indigenous community. They participated in cultural exchanges, enjoyed traditional food and dancing, and even took a dugout canoe ride.

The course also focused on key industries in Panama. Students visited DHL, learning about their sustainability goals and operational practices in the country. They gained a deeper understanding of the copper mining industry through a visit to a local mining company First Quantum, exploring topics such as government relations, sustainability, and environmental protection.

Furthermore, the trip included visits to major players in the global logistics and finance sectors. At Maersk, the President of Latin America & the Caribbean Region, provided valuable insights into the company's operations, while a visit to Insignia Financial Group offered a unique opportunity to learn from a partner and founder about their services and the financial landscape in Panama.

The Merrick School of Business Global Field Study program exemplifies the University of Baltimore's commitment to providing students with high-impact learning experiences that prepare them for success in the globalized business world.
