A faculty member since 1977, Professor Byron L. Warnken managed the law school's moot court program for many years. He inspired multiple generations of students to excel in oral and written advocacy. In addition, Warnken served as director of the Judicial Internship Program and Judicial "EXPLOR" program, placing more than 3,000 law students with judges.
Prior to his retirement in 2018, the law school named the Moot Court Room in Prof. Warnken's honor and renamed the annual intramural moot court competition the Byron L. Warnken Moot Court Competition. This annual competition—widely considered to be the quintessential 1L UBalt law school experience—is open to all first-year students as part of their spring writing course, Introduction to Advocacy.
Successful participants are invited by the BOA to join one of UBalt law's six moot court teams. Top students in the competition may further compete for annual awards, culminating each fall in the opportunity to argue their brief before a panel of sitting judges from the Maryland judiciary as well that year's 1L class. Information about the competition rules are publicized each spring by the BOA.
