Center for Sport and the Law

The Center for Sport and the Law at the University of Baltimore School of Law was established in 2009 with the support of the Baltimore Orioles professional baseball franchise and the Baltimore Ravens professional football franchise. The Center's goals are to foster academic leadership, community engagement, and student excellence in the theoretical and practical aspects of amateur and professional sports law.

Center News

• Prof. Dionne L. Koller, director of the Center, was named co-chair of the Commission on the State of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (also known as the USOPC Commission), in April 2021. The USOPC Commission must conduct a study reviewing recent USOPC reforms and submit its findings and recommendations to Congress.
• Dionne Koller, director of the Center, testified before a Senate committee July 1, 2020, urging Senate lawmakers to allow college athletes to earn income from endorsements, and to stifle NCAA control of athletes. Watch video of her testimony.
• Prof. Koller was a guest on a March 2019 episode of The Kojo Nnamdi Show on WAMU-FM, discussing whether NCAA athletes should be paid. Listen to the broadcast here.
• Prof. Koller also appeared as a guest on Maryland Public Television's public affairs show Direct Connection in April 2019, discussing the same topic of paying NCAA athletes. Watch the broadcast here.

The Center sponsors academic symposia, generates scholarship and engages in community partnerships that serve to provide students, the legal community, and amateur and professional sports stakeholders with an enhanced understanding of the legal structures and institutions that shape various athletic contexts, including recreational, interscholastic, intercollegiate, professional, and the Olympic movement.

 

The Center's director is Prof. Dionne Koller, whose scholarly interests include sport and the law and health law. Koller currently serves on the executive board for the Sports Law Section of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) and on the United States Anti-Doping Agency's Anti-Doping Review Board.
