Experience the behind-the-scenes workings of the judicial system.
We have a demonstrated record of success in preparing students for post-graduate judicial
clerkships. In fact, the University of Baltimore School of Law ranks among the top
schools nationwide for the number of graduates securing judicial clerkships, consistently
sending between 20 and 25 percent of each graduating class into these coveted positions at both trial and appellate
courts. It helps, of course, that so many University of Baltimore alumni are represented in the Maryland judiciary - many serving on the bench and many
more working behind the scenes.
How We Help:
Through our unique program, we match interested first year students with judges for
a summer externship experience.
Judges participate in the EXPLOR Program including Maryland circuit and district court judges from every county, Maryland
Court of Appeals and Court of Special Appeals judges, and seven U.S. District Court
and U.S. Bankruptcy court judges.
Our Judicial Externship Program provides you with the opportunity to intern with a
judge for academic credit during your second, third or fourth year.
You can develop a mentoring relationship with a judge, gain hands-on courtroom and
chambers experience, and build the professional credentials that give you a competitive
edge when applying for post-graduate clerkship positions.
Every fall, we host a popular appreciation reception for the Maryland Judiciary. There
are also numerous panels and presentations throughout the year that offer you the
opportunity to meet judges. Many judges also serve as adjunct faculty and teach classes
at the School of Law.
Individual counseling sessions to help you determine whether clerking is the right
choice for you, and identify the judicial clerkship opportunities that best serve
your career goals;
Extensive assistance with resume and cover letter drafting;
Mock interviews informed by decades of experience with the Maryland judiciary; and
Timely and accurate information about the hiring needs and application procedures
for every judge in Maryland.
The following guides contain a comprehensive list of opportunities and application
procedures for the upcoming recruitment term. They can be found in the Resource Library
on Symplicity (available only to current students and University of Baltimore Law
alumni).
University of Baltimore alumni are well represented in the Maryland judiciary - many
serving on the bench and many more working behind the scenes. Often current and former
judicial clerks can prove an invaluable source of advice and information. In a wide
variety of ways, we facilitate the development of your professional network connecting
you with the alumni you need to know.
