M.S. in negotiations and conflict management

This 36-credit Master of Science program—the first-ever program in Maryland—integrates a range of interdisciplinary perspectives to give a broad understanding of what conflict is, why it happens and how to resolve it. What You'll Learn

In this program, you'll learn how to:

  • analyze, understand and address various forms of social conflict
  • work with individuals, communities, organizations, regulatory bodies, conflicting social and ethnic groups, and even nations
  • promote understanding of conflict while mitigating its destructive aspects
  • negotiate, facilitate and pursue conflict transformation
  • embrace conflict as a catalyst for social change.

Beyond the Classroom

Your capstone internship experience will allow you to gain insight into practical applications of negotiation and conflict management in the field. The program's remarkable range of internships has partnered students with:

  • the Department of Energy
  • the Office of the Maryland Attorney General
  • the Better Business Bureau of Greater Maryland
  • the National Association for Conflict Resolution
  • the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
  • and the Baltimore City Office of the Labor Commissioner, among others.

You are encouraged to join the Negotiations and Conflict Management Student Association, which keeps students in this master's program informed and educated about relevant issues, provides peer support and guidance, and organizes events that nurture the professional growth of the student body.

The Alternatives to Violence Project is an association of community, school, and prison-based programs offering experiential workshops in personal growth, community development, and creative conflict management. 

The CNCM program is partnering with AVP-Maryland to offer CNCM students a unique internship opportunity to experience and facilitate the introduction of creative conflict management and interpersonal skills to prison inmates – a desperately underserved population with unlimited potential for growth.

The M.S. in Negotiations and Conflict Management program has partnered with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS)—a neutral and independent U.S. governmental agency that provides dispute resolution and conflict management services across the public, private, and federal sectors—to offer new educational and research opportunities for UBalt students and faculty and FMCS practitioners. The University of Baltimore and the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (MONSE) have entered into an agreement to launch a Community Violence Interruption Certificate for employees of Baltimore's Safe Streets program. The certificate will feature a curriculum developed by faculty in the CNCM program and UBalt's Schaefer Center for Public Policy. Read UBalt's announcement about this agreement.

Admission Requirements

Application deadlines:

  • spring semester admission: Dec.  1

Admission will be offered depending on availability of space, strength of your credentials and sufficiency of time for processing.

  • a bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Applicants who do not meet all of these qualifications may, with the approval of the program's admission committee, be accepted if there is space available. Additional criteria may apply; see the UBalt Graduate Catalog for further information.
  • Let us know when you are ready to earn your master's degree by applying to the program. Our online application will only take you a few minutes to complete. Before you submit the application, you’ll be asked to use your credit card or bank account to pay the $50 application fee.
  • A Statement of Personal Interest can be submitted electronically as part of the online application.
  • Insider tips: The earlier you apply and submit a completed application, the faster you’ll receive an admission decision. Each one of your supporting admission documents may be sent individually. Your admission portal will keep track of what the UBalt Admission team has received.
    • When you attend an information session or discuss your application with an Admission counselor be sure to get your application fee waiver code and save yourself $50.
