Shaping Baltimore's Business Future

Thumel Business Center Home of the Merrick School of Business

The Legacy of Robert G. Merrick Sr.

Imagine sitting in a University of Baltimore business class today.  Look around. The very building, the spirit of innovation, the focus on practical application – all are testaments to the vision of Robert G. Merrick Sr. (1895-1986), the man for whom the Merrick School of Business is named.

Robert Merrick wasn't just a name on a building; he was a force of nature. A decorated World War I veteran, a Johns Hopkins Ph.D. in economics, and a dynamic leader, he embodied the qualities the Merrick School cultivates in its students.  He wasn't content with theory alone.  He believed in putting knowledge into action, a philosophy that drove his remarkable success.

For 35 years, Merrick spearheaded the growth of Equitable Bank, transforming it from a modest $20 million operation with five branches into a powerhouse with $438 million in assets and 53 branches.  This wasn't just growth for growth's sake; it was about building a stronger financial foundation for Baltimore.

But his impact extended far beyond banking.  Merrick was a passionate philanthropist, generously supporting countless civic and educational institutions throughout the city.  His belief in investing in Baltimore's future continues today through the France-Merrick Foundation, administered by his family and trusted colleagues.  The Foundation's support has been instrumental in funding significant Baltimore projects, including three major gifts to the University of Baltimore between 1982 and 1996. These gifts not only established the Merrick School of Business but also endowed the Jacob France Institute, a vital center for business and economic research, and bolstered the Advantage MBA scholarship program, opening doors for future business leaders.

Every graduate of the Merrick School carries a piece of Robert G. Merrick Sr.'s legacy.  They embody his practical vision, his commitment to Baltimore, and his belief in the power of education.  His influence lives on, shaping not just businesses, but the very fabric of the Baltimore community he so deeply loved.
