Accounting Honors Program

This Merrick School of Business program is designed to produce leaders in the accounting field and in business in general. Students who have indicated a desire to major in accounting will be selected based on academic performance.

Area firms are extremely excited about this program. UBalt alumni are found throughout the Baltimore accounting community. This program allows area firms to interact with UBalt students who have already demonstrated strong academic performance and a desire to major in accounting, and it lays the groundwork for many strong opportunities.

About Accounting Honors

What are the program's differentiators?

Admission to the Accounting Honors program is by invitation only. Invitees, who have indicated a desire to major in accounting, will be selected based on performance in Intermediate Accounting I with an overall GPA of 3.5 or better and by faculty recommendation.

 

Other requirements include:

  • A completed program application
  • A letter of recommendation from an accounting professor
  • A personal statement discussing your career aspirations and how graduating from the Accounting Honors Program will benefit you.

To graduate in good standing, an Accounting Honors student must meet the requirements of the Honors program.

The student must:

  • be a member of the University of Baltimore's Helen P. Denit Honors Program;
  • be a member of the accounting honors program for at least the two semesters prior to graduation.
  • complete at least 12 credits of upper-division honors or enhanced courses.
  • successfully complete an internship (ACCT 495), preferably in the junior year, with a public accounting firm or other approved organization (counts as three of the 12 required credits);
  • maintain a grade point average of 3.5 with no grade less than a "B" in any upper-level accounting course:
  • be an active member of Beta Alpha Psi
  • participate in the programs' extracurricular activities, including approved activities and field trips; and
  • be a member of the Maryland Association of CPA's student group, "Tomorrow's CPA."

Honors students who graduate in good standing receive a special designation on their transcripts upon graduation.

Accounting Honors students are also encouraged to participate in the Accelerated Bachelors/Masters program which provides opportunities to earn a graduate degree in accounting and business advisory services, finance, or taxation.

 

The appeal of entering the combined program is that, with only an additional year of work beyond four years of undergraduate work—it allows students to:

  • deepen their understanding of accounting and related fields;
  • gain access to graduate courses;
  • obtain a Masters degree; and
  • facilitate qualification for the CPA examination.
