B.A. in English

Looking for a program that blends timeless literary wisdom with cutting-edge skills for the 21st century? Look no further!

Our Bachelor of Arts in English program is your gateway to a dynamic career in publications and communications. Whether you're into media production, graphic design, electronic publishing, writing, editing, or public relations, we've got you covered. Plus, our robust literary studies curriculum is perfect for aspiring teachers or those eyeing advanced degrees.

Dive into a world where literature meets innovation! As an English major here, you'll sharpen your mind by cultivating habits of attention, inquiry and analysis through deep literary exploration. You'll master the craft by developing your language skills, technique and creative vision as a poet or fiction writer. Embrace technology and gain practical insights into how it shapes ideas, expression and cultural values.

As part of your electives requirement (15 credits), you'll have the option to take courses in a suggested area of focus:

  • A Literature and Culture focus fosters the development of critical-thinking and interpretive skills through the study of literary works, aesthetics and historical perspectives from around the world.
  • A Creative Writing focus nurtures and refines creativity across multiple genres with particular attention to the importance of audience and of the editing process.
  • Professional Writing focus concentrates on the in-demand editing, writing and publishing skills valuable in almost every academic, governmental, nonprofit and business setting.

Beyond the classroom, you'll have the opportunity to participate in internships; write for UBalt's newspaper, The Sting, and its literary magazine, Welter; attend and participate in readings and other literary events; and even publish your own work.
