Degree Requirements

  • These requirements apply to students entering this program in fall 2020 and thereafter. Students who enrolled earlier should consult the catalog in effect at the time they enrolled.
  • Transfer students may apply up to 9 credits (three courses) of certain approved 200-level courses toward this major. For students transferring 300- and 400-level courses, at least 18 credits in this major must be taken at UBalt.

English Program Requirements (42 credits)

 

  General Education requirements for all new students entering UBalt in fall 2022 and after.
  • ENGL 301 Introduction to English Studies 
  • ENGL 365 Shakespeare's Influence
  • ENGL 390 Syntax, Semantics and Style
  • ENGL 395 Understanding Narrative 
  • ENGL 498 Seminar in English

AND

Choose:

  • TWO Literature courses (see list below),
  • ONE additional 300- or 400-level ENGL course, and
  • ONE additional 300- or 400-level English, Digital Communication or Integrated Arts course

An additional 15 credits of electives are required and must include 12 credits of 300- or 400-level ENGL courses and no more than one INTA or CMAT course. Electives have been arranged in suggested groupings based on optional areas of focus that students may pursue.

LITERATURE AND CULTURE (15 credits)

PROFESSIONAL WRITING (15 credits)

CREATIVE WRITING (15 credits)
Suggested:

  • ONE Literature course
  • THREE Workshop courses
  • ENGL 401 Publication and Performance

The following courses may be counted toward the English major with the approval of the program director:

  • ENGL 489 Directed Independent Study (1-3 credits)
  • ENGL 490 Honors Thesis
  • ENGL 493 Honors Seminar
  • ENGL 494 Thesis in Literature (3-6 credits)
  • IDIS 101 First Year Seminar: Introduction to University Learning 
    freshmen only; transfer students replace this with a different elective

Complete as many courses as necessary from any discipline to fulfill your 120-credit requirement, including this recommended elective:

  • ENGL 200 The Experience of Literature, or another 200-level literature course

Meet the UBalt Information Literacy graduation requirement by successfully completing one of the following:

  • INFO 110 Introduction to Information Literacy
  • ENGL 498 Seminar in English: The Modern Tradition

Mission Statement

The undergraduate English program serves as a space for the preservation and practice of traditional humanities. Our students develop critical thinking and writing skills that prepare them for future study, the world of work, and lifelong learning. The B.A. in English offers students individual and tailored programs of study in which they create and analyze texts across a variety of media with attention to language; historical, critical, and cultural contexts; aesthetics; and form.

Upon graduating from the B.A. in English program, students will be able to:

 Write effectively for a range of purposes and audiences.
