Disability and Access Services

Disability and Access Services provides reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities and works to ensure access to all campus facilities and programs.

Our Role:

assure you are provided appropriate adjustments and support to facilitate your access to UBalt’s academic programs
validate your needs as required under the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act (ADAA), reviewing and assessing documentation and determining appropriate, necessary accommodations and support
address systemic ableism and attitudes regarding disability- encouraging acceptance and dispelling myths
encourage use of and make available training for assistive technologies
provide referrals for work and personal achievement to support and promote a well-balanced life outside of UBalt
assist UBalt’s Office of Facilities Management with design suggestions to help ensure UBalt facilities are accessible.

Services include:

accommodations for the classroom and campus life
accessibility on campus
advocacy support for students registered with the office
executive function support and training

Crossing Borders:

A group of education officials from Singapore recently visited the University of Baltimore's Office of Disability and Access Services to discuss UBalt's success in establishing reasonable accommodations for disabled students. The Southeast Asian island nation does not have a federal law that requires public institutions to provide accommodations for people with disabilities. Although accommodations are currently provided at the elementary and secondary levels of education, they do not continue into the post-secondary school years.

"Even with the lack of a legal framework like ADA in which you can set up a system for accommodating students for purposes of testing, classroom access, and other related areas, they are working hard to establish the right set of policies so that they can achieve a standard of reasonable accommodations in many of their schools and universities," said Karyn Schulz, director of the center.
