Mailing Lists
Reduce the technical demands of group communication by using mailing lists. OTS supports four mailing list options. Each option is useful for different purposes. If you need help identifying which type of mailing list is best for your communication goals, contact the OTS Call Center.
List Server | Class Distribution List | Personal Distribution List | Global Distribution List
Mailing List Server (Details)
A mailing list server is a way to easily communicate with a group through e-mail. It is a list of e-mail addresses identified by a single e-mail address, such as ublistowners@listserv.ubalt.edu. This service is useful when the group is internal and external people and the owner wants to offer subscription control to the recipients. Visit the LISTSERV page for more information or you can submit a mailing list request. When you submit the request, we will review your answers to determine which kind of list to create.
Key Features
- Offers the owner and subscriber options such as restricting the membership, restricting who is allowed to send to this list, and how you receive the e-mails sent to the list.
- Can accommodate UBalt e-mail addresses and external addresses.
- Assigned an e-mail address.
- List can be private or public.
- Offers three list types: announcements list, unmoderated discussion list, and moderated discussion list.
Class Distribution Lists
Each active course has an e-mail distribution list created automatically and updated nightly. This is a great option for e-mailing all currently-enrolled students for certain class. The list can be used by the instructor of record, the Office of Records and Registration and the respective Dean's office. Class lists are available for 30 days after the semester ends.
Key Features
- Address format is SUBJECT_CATALOG_SECTION_TERM@listserv.ubalt.edu , example: PSYC_309_001_1132@listserv.ubalt.edu.
- Lists are available from the UBalt Global Address List.
- Can only be used when sending through UBalt's e-mail service.
- Lists exist for 30 days after the semester ends.
Personal Distribution Lists
Using Outlook (on campus) or Outlook Web Access, you can create a personal distribution list with contacts from your personal address book and/or the UBalt Global Address List. If there is a group of people you e-mail frequently, creating a personal distribution list saves time and is an efficient option for addressing that group. See this Microsoft page for instructions on creating a personal distribution list.
Key Features
- Can contain addresses from personal contacts and the UBalt Global Address List.
- Your personal distribution list is available to you only, but you can share a list.
- Accommodates up to 125 contacts.
- There is no e-mail address for the list.
Global Distribution Lists
A global distribution list can be requested when you need a UBalt e-mail address that is not tied to an individual's account. This is useful when a department wants an efficient way to contact everyone in their department through e-mail. Other uses include project teams, events that require multiple people to see e-mail related to that event, or when a general e-mail address is needed to contact an office without giving out a person's address. To request, contact the Call Center or submit a mailing list request. When you submit the request, we will review your answers to determine which kind of list to create.
Key Features
- Accommodates UBalt addresses only.
- Can be changed only by OTS.
- Assigned a UBalt e-mail address.
- Who can send to the list can be restricted.
