The seventh annual University of Baltimore Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony will honor more than 25 athletes and a coach from baseball, basketball, soccer, wrestling, and lacrosse, on Thursday, May 6 at 5:30 p.m. at Martin's Valley Mansion, 594 Cranbrook Road, Hunt Valley, Md. (tickets and registration information below).
Home to more than 150 All-American athletes during its 50-plus years of competitive collegiate sports, UB won numerous Mason-Dixon team championships in baseball, basketball, golf, lacrosse, soccer and wrestling. The Athletic Hall of Fame is located in the UB Student Center, 21 W. Mt. Royal Ave.
This year's event will induct the 34 members of the 1956 UB lacrosse team, the University's first lacrosse team to win a U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association title, which was followed by four consecutive USILA Division titles. The team was Laurie Cox Division (Class B) champions, tied the University of Maryland with the most goals scored (164) and featured eight players who went on to become All-Americans.
The event will also honor baseball coach John "Jack" H. Hubbard, B.S. '67, as an outstanding contributor to UB's success in athletics. He was head coach of UB's baseball team from 1971-75, during which time the team was the Northern Division champion in the Mason-Dixon Conference (1972) and placed third in the NCAA II Southern Regional in the Mason-Dixon championships (1973). Hubbard went on to a professional career in baseball, working for various teams in player instruction and scouting roles. He currently serves as the major league training instructor for the New York Yankees.
The Athletic Hall of Fame began after an extended dialogue with alumni leaders, students and local sports aficionados, who worked with the UB leadership to appropriately acknowledge the long history of sports at UB. In the past five years, more than 100 athletes and coaches have entered the hall, each selected by an executive board of former UB student-athletes and coaches.
