A team-based competition to create videogames will be hosted by the University of Baltimore's Digital Entertainment Networking club on Friday, May 6, beginning at 4 p.m. in the M. Scot Kaufman Auditorium in the William H. Thumel Sr. Business Center (the Merrick School of Business), 11 W. Mt. Royal Ave. As many as 14 teams of students in UB's acclaimed Simulation and Digital Entertainment undergraduate major and in other academic programs will compete for prizes in a showcase of their best efforts at developing a variety of games—fun, educational, role-playing, etc. The event is free and open to the public.
Themes of the competition incorporate dreams, time and moral ambiguity to develop new gameplay and stories that make for interesting, entertaining interactions and a wide variety of games. All games must involve these three elements in some fashion.
Prizes will be awarded by UB faculty, UB students, and by some of Maryland's leading game-development companies.
The Digital Entertainment Networking club offers support and networking opportunities for all UB students seeking employment and internship opportunities in the field of simulation and digital entertainment. Currently, 64 students are involved in the club. Among its activities is a research project for the Smithsonian American Art Museum, which will open an Art of Video Games exhibition in 2012.
The University of Baltimore is a member of the University System of Maryland and comprises the School of Law, the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Public Affairs and the Merrick School of Business.
