Ñusta Carranza Ko, associate professor in The University of Baltimore's School of Public and International Affairs, has been awarded the 2024 APSA Award for Teaching Innovation by the American Political Science Association. The award is given to "a political scientist who has developed an effective new approach to teaching in the discipline."
Dr. Ko says she has taken a new direction in her teaching research methods by engaging with open education pedagogy practices.
"This began originally from my earlier collaborations with Michael Shochet, the director of the [University's] RLB Library," she says. These practices "increase student engagement while also advancing the aims of improving equity in the classroom, especially in a university with a diverse student body."
Open education pedagogy that involves collaborative and interactive creation of knowledge and learning experiences is underutilized as a framework for teaching in research methods classrooms, Prof. Ko says.
"By creating and launching renewable assignments mirroring open education practices, I have been able to create knowledge and address social justice elements involving redistributive (having free access to resources), recognitive (views from diverse socio-cultural groups), and representational justice (self-determination of marginalized peoples)," she adds.
