Five Things You Need to Know About Writing for School and Work

"Five Things You Need to Know About Writing for School and Work," a brownbag workshop series hosted by the Academic Resource Center, will be held March 1-5 in Room 301 of the Student Center. The series will offer useful tips and strategies for correcting common writing problems. Whether you're a first-year student or already working in your major, these workshops can help you. Each session is led by a UB faculty member. You can take one or all five—they're free and open to all students.

All sessions will begin at 12:30 p.m. and continue until 2 p.m.

Monday, March 1
"Treat Me Right: Editing for Correctness"
Mistakes in writing tell your reader that you don't care about what you’re writing—even when you do. Learning how to proofread is essential for all writers. This session includes a list of most common errors and how to avoid them.

Tuesday, March 2
"Quit While You're Ahead: Writing Concisely"
Why write "due to the fact that" when "because" is more concise? Using a gallon of words when a teaspoon will do can confuse and possibly irritate your reader, so come to this fun workshop to learn to avoid wordiness.

Wednesday, March 3
"Grace Under Pressure: How to Excel at Timed Writing"
Learn how to recognize different types of essay questions, organize a response that fits the requirements of the assignment and edit for a polished response tailored to your audience.

Thursday, March 4
"To Catch a Thief: Spotting and Avoiding Plagiarism"
Develop strategies for understanding and avoiding plagiarism and learn how to use a style sheet (APA or MLA) to correctly document a paper.

Friday, March 5
"Start Me Up: Overcoming Writer's Block"
Why can it be so hard to get started writing? Everyone who has ever picked up a pen or sat at a keyboard has felt the paralysis of writer's block. Learn some fun and helpful strategies to cure this recurring affliction.
